Penstone Glade is our cherished community space situated in the peaceful angle between the railway tracks and alongside the River Yeo. This unique location is a riverside woodland area which is run by the community for the quiet enjoyment of all. The Glade is situated just before the railway bridge as you come into Penstone.
Please feel free to use the Glade at any time. It’s an ideal spot for finding some tranquillity on a busy day, enjoying time outdoors or for children to play in. There are picnic benches and BBQs which you are welcome to use.
We run a number of events throughout the year to bring the local community together. Specific dates are advertised in the Colebrooke Bell and on the sign on the Glade’s gate. They always have a relaxed and welcoming feel and everyone is welcome.
The yearly calendar of events includes:
Summer Solstice BBQ: To celebrate the longest day in the year. A bring and share BBQ around 20 June
Apple Pressing: An opportunity to make delicious apple juice and cider from local apples using the Glade’s pressing and juicing equipment. Bring your own apples if you have a tree but there are always plenty to share if not. Around the start of October
Winter Solstice: Celebrating the year’s shortest day, we usually have a bonfire, Santa’s grotto, elf trail and carols. Around the 22 December
If you would like to support the Glade there are a number of ways you can get involved.
In the Autumn and Spring we have working parties where we meet for a few hours to do some maintenance jobs in the Glade to keep it looking nice all year round. The dates for these are advertised on the gate of the Glade.
Those who can help to keep the lawn in the Glade looking neat. There’s no formal rota, but if you see it’s in need of a cut and have the time, please contact Paul Clemence for the key to the shed where the lawnmower is kept. paulclemence@clara.co.uk
There are some ongoing yearly costs for upkeep of the Glade which include insurance, equipment hire for events and lawn mower fuel. For those who are able, a yearly contribution to support these costs by becoming a ‘Friend of the Glade’ is extremely helpful. Please contact Paul Clemence via email on paulclemence@clara.co.uk
Alternatively, a small contribution to cover the cost of these events described above is gratefully received and a donation box is left out on the day.
